What to Do

Agios Nikolaos, located in the largest natural gulf of Crete, the Gulf of Mirabello, meaning beautiful view (Mira Bella). The famous lake Voulismeni around which the city center is built still impresses thousands of visitors every summer. The lake is surrounded by small local tavernas, cafes and souvenir shops and is the ideal location to take the most stunning photos to remember your holidays!

During your stay in Agios Nikolaos visit the village Elounda, just 9 km distance. A small but busy cosmopolitan village where you will find small, pretty beaches with crystal clear waters! Opposite of Elounda, visit the island the historic island of Spinalonga, walk along and swim at the peninsula of Kolokitha. Explore the many little villages (Mavrikiano, Plaka, Skisma, Epano Elounda) far from the sea, offering a window into times gone by.

Although very close to Agios Nikolaos (and therefore quite touristic), is a small town, made of myths and old stories. It is one of the oldest villages of Crete and still retains its old architectural physiognomy. In Kritsa, apart from the walk in the small alleys, it is worth walking in the Gorge of Kritsa, to visit the folklore museums and to admire the frescoes in its Byzantine monuments, with the most important of all the Panagia Kera.

Not so close to Agios Nikolaos, but sure a place worth visit during your holidays in the area is the Knossos Palace in Heraklion. Minoan palace is a place of history, legends, and Crete’s most extensive and important archaeological site. The palace is the largest, most complex, and most fancy of all in Greece. Apart from its construction and architecture, the Palace of Knossos is most famous for its connection to Greek mythology. Namely, the tale of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur and the one of Daedalus and Icarus. Visit this sightseeing and let its history travel you in the past!
